About My Artwork

This is Biff & Rab.
This is a bit about me andwhat I'm trying to do with my artwork. My real name is Robert McCullough and I'm from Glasgow, Scotland, I was brought up in a lovely big housing scheme called Castlemilk on the outskirts of the city. I've been into art and drawing since I was at school, it was the only thing I liked. My drawings before I discovered Celtic art were ok. I was a graphic designer for a heritage organization in the east end of Glasgow, but I was still looking for my “thing” in art. The first artist I really got into was M C Escher-his work still fascinates me.

My first encounter with Celtic Art (Apart from at School when I was too young to appreciate it) was on the 1985 record sleeve of the Hawkwind album called The Chronicle Of The Black Sword. The cover artwork by John Coulthart fascinated me. I just had to learn how it was done. It was years later that a friend of mine (Ally Clyne) said he had a book about some interesting ways of constructing Celtic designs, the book was by George Bain

"The Construction Methods Of Celtic Art"

This is one of the best I have ever seen on Celtic art construction. As soon as I seen it, I knew I had found my “thing”. Celtic art is like that, it hits you on a deep level or it don’t. Most of my work is done using George Bain’s freehand Pictish construction methods. I also use the Celtic grid method developed by George's son Ian Bain, this is very easy and fast way to learn how to construct Celtic Knotwork.

My own artwork is an expression of my deep love of drawing, Celtic Art in particular. As a modern Celtic artist I am expressing esoteric (hidden) ideas within my artwork, as did our ancestors. I have now been studying Celtic Art Construction Methods for over 17 years. I was running my own Gallery/ T-shirt Shop called Ultan Art for a few years in Alexandria. I just recently got a wood burner. Thanks to Lateacha Reverse' for all your help and encouragement in this. I’m now practicing burning designs on wood. I hope to be selling them soon ; ) … I'm now tattooing... I hope one day to be doing my Celtic artwork on skin. P.S I need to update this picture, I've now got a skinhead ; )
